This year is flying by

I have been so busy that I did not realize I had not posted on the blog since August.

Since I last wrote, I experienced the one year anniversary of my husband's death. I never had any idea just how difficult if would be to just get up and function because of what date is was. I actually remember sitting at my desk and seeing (very vividly) me opening the door and the 2 police officers standing there waiting to tell me he had been killed. At the same time I was realizing that I had come so far since that day a year before. I don't talk too much about my grieving experiences but I have been on a constant roller coaster ride. My heart was broken into a million different pieces on Sept. 15, 2007. Just now do I feel as if I have the puzzle glue that will hold it back together again. It will be almost whole. There will always be a very large piece missing. I know John is smiling down on me each and every day.

I am actually starting to want to see other people again. I miss companionship. I have enjoyed chatting with some very nice men online. I have even gone so far as to meet some of them in person. It is very different dating in your 40's than when I was a teenager. :)

Alia is getting so big. She will be three in April and very busy exploring the world. You definitely have to keep a constant eye on her or she will do things like fingerpaint with a jar of Vaseline! The picture above is a new picture of her.

I went to Vermont to see Michael in September. My grandmother and I went. It was a nice weekend away.

Kira has gotten almost everything planned for the wedding. It is now just paying for it all. :)

Well, this should bring you up to date with what has been going on with me over the last couple of months.

B I N G O....Can you say Bingo????

Does anyone else have memories of playing bingo in elementary school for little prizes like a pink pencil? I certainly do. It was a great way for my teacher to teach us whatever subject they were teaching at the time. I use to think it was great! As I got older I would go to play bingo at a bingo hall with both my mother and grandmother. Boy did things change from elementary school. Not only did you get numerous cards (not just one like at school) but you actually played for money. Lastly, you did not play traditional bingo. There were many different bingos (four corners, T, box, etc).

In today's world the children need to have a video to catch there attention. Disney has come out with Disney Bingo This is a great way to introduce you little ones to the classic game of bingo (with a twist). This game uses their favorite disney characters and a DVD to teach them how to play bingo. I can only imagine my little granddaughter in about a year playing this game. She loves princesses and Nemo. What she will not realize is that it is helping her learn her letters, numbers, colors and matching. I love games that will help her learn while she has fun. If you are interested in purchasing this game you can go to either Amazon or Drugstore.com By shopping online, you will save the gas of running to the toystore!

Wii

Okay, I have to admit it...I am addicted to the Wii game system. I got a Wii earlier this week and have been playing Wii sports every night. Now I have the Wii Fit. I highly recommend this system and program to anyone that wants to exercise at home. You do all types of exercises such as yoga, aerobics, strength training, and balance. The workouts start out slow and it can tell how you are actually doing during the workout. As you progress so does your workout. The good part about this is it makes the workout fun!

Well, I am back to my exercises!

Hollywood Love

Have you ever thought what are some of the great lines from movies that everyone seems to know? There is always the line, "You had me at hello...." or "Show me the money!" I don't know about you but I have personally used the line "Show me the money!" many many times to illustrate that I will not do something until I get proof that I will be paid or when I am playing around with my friends. How many times have you said "Houston we have a problem." We use that line at work whenever there are problems.

If you have ever quoted a line from a movie then you should really go to VO5's Extreme Style by VO5's Ultimate Flirting Championship at Extreme Style by VO5

I played the game however they had me be the judge. Therefore the movie lines did not help me. You should see if the great lines from your favorite movies helps you when play Extreme Style by VO5

Please come back to this post and leave a comment about how you did at VO5's Ultimate Flirting Championship.

Boy has it been busy

I just realized that I have not written in a very long time. My oldest daughter is planning a wedding for March, 2009. She is trying to get as much stuff taken care of now and then by the time the holidays come around we won't have to worry too much about the wedding. So right now it has been crazy. Yesterday we went wedding dress shopping. I was very impressed. I really thought it would take her a couple of trips to find the dress. She found it at the first place we went and start to finish it only took 3 hours. We also found the brides maids dresses and the flower girl dresses. Mission accomplished. Now I just have to go look for mine.

Also, my son is home this week from Vermont. He came home to go to a friend's wedding and to make their wedding cakes. As I write this, my home smells like cake and icing. I have also found that since he has been home we have been running all over the place in the evenings (times I would be usually home resting.) Therefore this week has been a very tiring week!

Well I am going to wrap it up for now.

The Great American Seafood Cookoff

Below is a recipe that I make. It is something very simple but because I am a native Marylander this is an important recipe for this area of the country.

Maryland Crab Cakes:

1 pound lump backfin crab meat
1 slice of bread
2 tablespoons mustard
1 teaspoon mayonaise
2 teaspoons Old Bay Seafood Seasoning
1 egg

Dump all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix. (It is best to mix with your hands). Now divide the mixture into six sections. Form each section into a ball. Place the ball on a cookie sheet. Once all the balls are made you place the cookie sheet in the oven. The oven should be set at 350 degrees. You usually cook them approximately 15 minutes. You really cook them until they are golden brown and a crispy on the outside.

I usually serve the crab cakes with either some vegetable or a side salad and dinner rolls.

This recipe will be a great contender for the Great American Seafood Cook Off Cook off because it is a basic recipe with great taste. Have you ever noticed that other regions try to make Maryland Crab Cakes (they never do). This recipe represents the State of Maryland and the great seafood that comes out of our Chesapeake Bay. More and more people need to be aware of the amount of good seafood that comes out of the Chesapeake Bay so we can nuture the bay and keep the good local seafood coming for generations.

So try the recipe above and let me know what you think. Also, please let me know if you make any changes to the recipe.

The knitted purse

Here is the purse that I have been promising pictures of for the last couple of weeks. I was in need of a summer purse and did not find anything that I would want to purse. Therefore, I decided that I would make a cotton bag out of the left over yarn I had laying around my house. I will add the instructions later this evening.

Zenni Optical - Great frames at lower costs

It is that time of the year again for me. I am going to the eye doctor on Saturday. To be honest, I am dreading the cost of the frames I will need to purchase. My vision coverage only covers the cost of frames every 2 years. This is ok. However I really abuse frames so I will need to purchase new frames. I have found a site online that has some really cool looking frames at really reasonable costs. zennioptical.com Zenni Optical has a wide range of frames to choose from (depending on your taste). They have frames as low as $8.00 per pair. In today's economy I am sure there are a lot of people out there trying to figure out how they are going to afford the new pair of glasses they need.

As you can see by the pictures above this site offers a great variety of frame styles. They offer frames for mean and women. They also offer a nice selection of frames for children. The children's frames are really cute and that can be very important for the child ordering glasses. I know this from experience. One of my children has been wearing glasses since she was three years old.

It is well worth taking few minutes to check out the frames on Zenni Optical. I want to thank Zenni Optical for allowing me to discuss their lovely products on this blog.

knitting the purse

I have been busy working on the summer cotton purse this last week. As some of you know, I had some surgery last Monday. I had to take the next week off from work so what better time to make a summer purse....so I thought. I did not factor in how tired I would be and how "out of it" the pain medication would make me feel. I have also promised to post the pattern once I finished the purse. I will post it and pictures of the purse once I get it finished. I need to sew up some sides and knit the handles and closure flap. I also need to figure out how to line the purse. I have a great piece of fabric that will go with the colors of the purse. However lining the purse is not one of my strong points!

Please bear with me until I get all the information on the site.

Pay Per Post - A new experience

payperpost

I have recently been approved to write blog postings for PayPerPost.com. This is a website that will pay you to write blog postings on your blog. As anyone that knows me can tell you, I am always trying to find ways to supplement my income. I do surveys, I open e-mails to earn points toward gift cards, I enter contests and now I am writing blog postings for money. I was put onto PayPerPost.com by Anjie at freelancebyu. Anjie writes a great blog and newsletter that helps her reader find ways to save money or make supplemental money. She had posted on her blog about PayPerPost.com. It took me a little while to get approved because I was not able to write to my blog as much as I had wanted. I needed to have at least 10 postings within a one month period. I finally did it and got approved.

Since I have not been with PPP too long, I really have not had time to explore all the opportunities that are available on the site. I have not had time to make friends from PPP; however, I am really looking forward to meeting people that are successful on this site.

I really love the idea of being paid to post blogs because I am just making it each month on my income. I have seriously considered getting a second job but have held off because of the crazy hours I work on my first job. I can make a little extra money writing for payperpost and I may not have to get a second job.

I plan on paying off debt and then saving to purchase a house. The money I make from PPP will help me achieve my goals!!!

Knitting

I am knitting again like a fool. I am actually designing a cotton purse which is on my needles as I write this. I will post pictures over the weekend and will finish writing the pattern. Once the pattern is written I will post it here. I needed a new summer bag and could not find anything that I liked. My youngest daughter claims that I will knit just about anything. She may be correct. I am addicted to knitting.

Hartman's Leather Luggage

Hartman Leather Luggage appears to be very well made. Here is a link to their leather collection. Leather Luggage
I love the look of the luggage. Yes it is pricey but you are paying for something that is quality made. This picture is of the 50" Mobile Traveler Garment Bag. It is in the Intensity line. The Intensity Line is one of a couple lines of Wheeled Luggage There are many pieces that match this particular item. I like how this piece is lined in plastic. This is a great feature. How many times have gone to pick up your luggage after a flight and see a wet stain on the side of your luggage. Yes, the shampoo has leaked through the entire luggage. The plastic lining will keep some of the mess down the next time you forget to put liquid items in plastic bags. I also like the over the door hook that detaches when you need it. That is a really nice feature of anyone that regularly travels. This particular piece is on sale for $700 (regular price is $875.00). Yes, I will admit it is a lot of money, especially in today's economy. However, the consumer is paying for a wonderfully made piece of luggage. This piece would probably be one of the only garment bags the consumer will ever have to purchase. If you think of it that way, it is definitely worth the amount of money Hartman Luggage charges!

Hartman Luggage is celebrating 130 years of doing business. That alone says a lot. Companies do not make it 130 years without selling quality merchandise. If you are looking to make a luggage purchase you really should check out Hartman's luggage at http://www.hartmann.com/

Busy weekend

Here it is Saturday evening already. I have had a busy weekend so far and have plans for tomorrow also. Last night Laura, Susan and I met my best friend, Terry at IKEA. She wants to get a new computer desk and computer chair for her house. Laura is going to help her since Laura works at IKEA. We walked through the entire store and found quilts, living rooms chairs for me, and of course her desk and chair. After going through the store we went to Don Pablo's for dinner. Terry and I had a blast. We had not been out on a Friday night in ages (we are usually in bed by 8:30 - 9:00 come Friday. Both of us work very long days during the week and wear down by Friday. Terry and I laughed and kidded. At one point, I looked over at Laura and Susan. They are just looking at us like they did not know us. Susan made a comment that I am not like that when I am home. It is funny to realize that the children see me as someone totally different than I am when I am with friends.

This morning I had to go get the blood work done for the operation next week. Once that was done I went to my daughter Kira's apartment for breakfast with her and her father. We needed to discuss all her wedding plans and money. I left there to go get my granddaughter, Alia. Alia and I then went to Terry's house for lunch. Terry is a great cook. She makes pasta from scratch! We left there to head home. Alia had not had a nap yet and she stayed awake the entire trip home. However around 7:30 p.m. she crashed and burned. She is sound asleep in my bed. :)

Tomorrow, Kira and I are going to a wine tasting at one of our local parks. I am really looking forward to it. There is suppose to be a chocolate Zinfandel that I can't wait to get my hand on.! I will comment on my activities tomorrow.

Oh, right now I am getting ready to go back and work on the cotton purse I am creating. I am making up the pattern as I go. I will post some pictures soon.

Hopefully Relief is Coming!!!!

If you don't live in Baltimore, Maryland then you may not be under an extreme heat warning. The last few days have been horribly hot. The schools have been closing 1/2 days and everyone else is trying to stay inside. That is everyone except the people that have to work outside. I work for Allied Waste so all our drivers have to be outside in all this heat. However, we are all excited because we are suppose to have a cool front come in. Tomorrow is predicted to only go up to 88 degrees. That sound tell you how hot it has been when we are excited about 88 degrees.

I just 3 weeks away from having my surgery. I had a procedure yesterday. I am at the point where all I want is for the surgery to be over and for me to start my recovery. Please keep me in your prayers. Thanks,

I am knitting again

After a couple of months without knitting, I actually picked up a project today. I decided that it was definitely too hot (95 degrees +) to do anything outside today. I mean I started sweating the instant I walked out the door this morning to take my granddaughter, Alia, home. I found a pattern for a diamond pattern purse using cotton yarn. I got about 1/4 of it done today! It felt wonderful having the knitting needles and yarn in my hands again. I think I can thank Debbie MacComber's "Knitting Together" for getting me motivated again. I can't wait to get the purse finished.

Life in General

I have to update everyone what has been going on in my life. Since I came back from vacation 2 weeks ago I have had numerous doctors appointments. Yes you do start falling apart once you hit your 40!!!! :) On that note, I am in the process of scheduling a minor surgery (hopefully 2 at the same time). It appears I will be having surgery on 6/30 and will be out of work again for another 1 to 2 weeks. Of course I have surgery on the Monday before July 4th!. I am hoping that I feel up to going to see fireworks on the 4th. Last year I could not go because John had gotten himself in the hospital after one of his binges. I love going to see fireworks so if everyone could say just a little prayer that I will be up to going I would appreciate. I know it seems minor but this is something I really love.

I do think that I may have decided that when my lease is up in November, I will try to move to another place. I am not sure if I will stay in the area that I am currently living or move to another area. I just found while I was on vacation I did not have any sad moments with regard to remembering my late husband. However when I came home, it started again. I don't want to ever forget him. I just think it may be time for me to move so that I can start a fresh life.

We are also very busy planning Kira's wedding. She and I went yesterday and signed the papers to reserve the reception hall. It is an old Mansion located in Catsonsville, MD. Kira lives very close to this place which will be very convenient for her. It is absolutely lovely!!!! I still need to get her a list of addresses so she can send out "Save the Date" notices. I think this may be a very busy year coming up!!!!

Here are some pictures from our family's vacation in Myrtle Beach

This is the beach in Myrtle Beach at sunset. Looking at this picture reminds me why I could live down there all the time.

Spring Cleaning - A little Late!

I went into work for a couple hours yesterday (still trying to catch up from being on vacation the week before). While I was sitting at my desk I realized that when I come to work, I don't get all congested like I do at home. Therefore, when I got home I decided to tear the house about and scrub everything down. It really felt good to have been so productive and feel as if things are getting really clean again. Of course by the time I was finished, I was exhausted and very congested. So I took some sinus medicine which knocked me out. I curled up on the couch with every intention of reading a book I am into. However, I think I only read a page or two before I dosed off. I took a really long nap, which felt great. It was raining and I had the sliding door open. It just soothed me right to sleep!!

I have a goal of finishing my book today and then trying to find a new knitting project. I really need to use up some of my stash. I better get going.....time to read!

I want to go back on vacation

I have only been back from vacation for a few days and I am ready to leave again. After only one day at work, I can feel the stress coming back. I was so relaxed when I came back. It is really sad that this quickly it can affect me. I need to find ways to reduce the stress because I cannot allow the stress to get as bad as it was before I left.

There is something about being away from your life that allows you to totally relax. Now it is my job to figure out how to relax while living my "normal" life.

Back to Normal Life

Today was the day that reality set back in. I had to get up and head off to work this morning. I have to be at work at 6:00 a.m. which means I head off to bed early. This was not too easy last night because while vacation I had completely gotten off schedule. Also, Michael is flying home to Vermont this evening. He will no longer be sleeping on my couch. I should be able to see him in July. He is coming home to bake a wedding cake for one of Kira's friends.

I really had a difficult time getting back into the swing of things today at work. I had not been on a vacation for 5 years. I was totally amazed at how many people commented on how relaxed I appeared today. Being completely honest, I have not felt this relaxed in years. I did not realize how much stress I have been carrying around with me, especially the last year. What I do realize is that I will not wait another 5 years for me to take vacations. I have 3 weeks vacation each year and I am going to use them.

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful summer!

Kira got engaged

Wednesday while we were all at the beach, Jesus asked my permission to ask Kira to marry him.  It was so nice.  He and I were out in the ocean when he asked me.  Later that evening, Jesus and Kira decided to go for a walk on the beach.  He asked here while they were on the beach.  Kira came barging into the condo screaming "We are getting married!"  They want to get married in March, 2009.  I guess the craziness will really kick in now.  :)

I am enjoying a little quiet time at the condo today.  Kira and Jesus are at the beach.  Mike went on the casino ship and I don't know where Laura and Susan headed off to.  That is okay.  I am working on the computer and trying to get a few things cleaned up here so we won't have much to do tomorrow before driving home.  I can't believe the week is already over.  I will post pictures of everyone once I get home.

All the"KIDS" are here on vacation

Believe it or not, all my grown children have arrived here in Myrtle Beach.  Kira and Jesus, Laura and Susan, and Michael are all here.  Laura and Susan were the last to arrive here last night.  They drove through parts of NC under tornado warnings.  It was my little girl's first long driving trip.  Susan came in saying that if this is how trips are she will not be going on any more.  We all went to the beach today.  That was really nice since we have a high of 86 degrees.  I actually got in the ocean today.  IT FELT GREAT!!!!

I just got back from trying to go to my grandparents' house.  They had a house down here for as long as I can remember.  I use to spend every summer down here with them.  My grI wiandfather passed away appoximately 5 years ago and my grandmother last year.  I have not been to the house since they have passed.  The key I was given would not work.  I wanted to go by myself the first time.  However, it looks as if I am going to have to take one of the kids with me to see if we can get in the house.  My mom and aunt are going to sell the house, a terrible shame, so I really want to go in and say my goodbyes before it is sold.

We are having a wonderful time.  It is amazing how fast time flies when you are not at work!!!  Ha Ha.

VACATION TIME

I am here in Myrle Beach, SC for a week of rest and relaxation.  My son, Michael drove down with me after flying down from Vermont.  My oldest daughter, Kira and her boyfriend and my youngest daughter, and her girlfriend are all driving down today.  I am really looking forward to spending a couple of days with my children.  It does not happen that often now that they are all grown.  Alia, my granddaughter was suppose to come to the beach for the first time; however, she got double ear infections 2 days before the trip.  We were all greatly disappointed that she was not well enough to come.  I think all of us were excited to play with her at the beach and watch for the first time down here.

We are actually staying in North Myrtle Beach.  I have not been down here in over 5 years.  It is sad to think about it being that long.  I use to stay all summer down here with my grandparents.  Unfortunately,  North Myrtle Beach has built up so much.  I knew it would have to happen but it is still sad.  Also, you should see the size of the houses that they are putting up down here.  These are not beach houses!!!!  I think the saddest thing I have seen though has to be the inablity to see the ocean anymore when you drive down Ocean Blvd.  When I get back I will post many pictures of our adventures down here!

Happy Mother's Day

First and foremost, Happy Mother's Day to all Mom's out there. I have had a truely lovely day with my family. My son called from Vermont earlier this morning. I was in the middle of watching "PS I Love You" and was crying when he called. Once I convinced him I was okay we talked for a few minutes and then I got back to the movie. My youngest daughter and her girlfriend got me a couple of candles (I love good smelling candles), a pink rose, and card last night. Kira, my oldest, and Jesus got me a lovely plant and a nice card. I spent the day at a family gathering.

I am getting ready to go on vacation next week so this week is going to be a little hectic. I know I should not wait till the last minute to get things done but I always do. I have to get new tires and an oil change before we leave. All the kids, their significant others, my granddaughter, and myself are heading to sunny Myrtle Beach. I have not been on a vacation in over 5 years. This is muchly needed.

Oh, before I wrap it up for today, here is the lastest list of freebies I have gotten this week:

1. True Stories Magazine
2. Sample of Nature best dog food (giving it to a friend)
3. Super shine cleaner
4. Dozen cookies from Food Lion with their coupon.
5. 12 pack of Diet Pepsi Max (from a contest). One of the cans in the 12 pack was empty so I called them. They are sending out coupons to replace my 12 pack.

I need to get off of here and start getting ready for a long week at work. Doesn't it always seem as if the week before vacation goes in super long motion.

Busy Weekend !

I have had a very busy weekend so far. As I posted on Friday afternoon, I went out on a date Friday evening. I have admit to being very nervous about the whole idea of dating again. We went to the Long Horn restaurant. Dinner was delicious and the conversation was great. It was funny. I told my dinner partner that all of my children would know that I was on a date before the evening was over, including my son in Vermont. When I walked in the house, Laura told me that my son had called from Vermont and wanted to know if I was already asleep. She told him, "No, Mom is on a date." He called back later and was teasing me like crazy. They are not use to me going out and not being home.

Saturday, I got up and headed into work for a half day. From there I went to my girlfriend Terry's house. She is one of the best cooks I know. She loves to cook for everyone and had invited me over for lunch. She was surprised when I did not have Alia with me but I told her i would be picking her up later. We had a wonderful time just sitting and talking. Terry is one of my dearest friends and it felt great just spending time with her. From her house, I picked up Alia. She is so much fun to have these days. She is talking up a storm! She suprises me each week with something new. Last night she sang the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star just out of the blue! I hate to brag but she is one smart little cookie. She also loves to play on the computer. I sometimes have to remember she just turned 2!

Well, I am going to wrap it up for now. I am waiting for someone to come pick some books I am selling on Craigslist.

Happy Friday

Boy am I really glad it is Friday, even though I have to go into work for a few hours on Saturday morning. I took yesterday day off because it had been so hectic I needed a break. However, it made it even that much more difficult to get up and go into today.

I am going out with someone tonight on a date. This feels very strange to be dating again at my age. To be completely honest, I am a nervous wreck. They were all teasing me at work today. I am slowing getting use to be single again. I cannot believe that it has almost been 9 months since John passed away. In some ways it feels like just yesterday and then in others I feel as if it has been a life time since I saw him last. I do have to admit that I really miss him. With all his faults (and yes he had them), he was still my best friend. I just hope that when he looks down on me now he knows how much I will always love him.

I am going to wrap it up for now because I really need to start getting myself together for tonight.

First thing I did after opening my mail was to go back onto mypoints.com and place an order on Old Navy. By doing this, I am getting points towards more rewards. I bought a beach towel, 2 pairs of flip flops, and a tank top. Out of my pocket I only paid $3.06. I don't think this is bad at all.

I went shopping earlier and saved quite a bit of money also. I bought 2 Johnson & Johnson Cleaning buddy soap bars for Alia. At Walmart they were $.94 each. I had a coupon for $2.00 off 2. I actually made money on that deal. I then went grocery shopping. I got a sour cream cake completely free from a coupon in their weekly e-mail. I also had printed out numerous coupons from mypoints.com. Each coupon that I redeem from their site gives me 10 points, plus I save the money of the coupon. Of course, I only buy these items when the are on sale also.

New Picture of Alia

While I did not get Alia this weekend (because both she and I have had the flu again this week), I still needed to update a picture of her. I took this picture last weekend. When I really looked at it I realized just how much she looks like her Poppy. John would have been so proud of her. I still believe that he is her guardian angel!

First Snow of 2008

Well, today the Baltimore area is experiencing the first snow fall of the new year. We are only getting approximately 3 inches; however, it is very pretty. I should have taken some pictures but it got dark before I was able to get some. I would really like a snow fall that would allow me to stay home without feeling guilty.

I need to get some work done on my swap-bot swaps. I should be working on them instead of writing but I just love snow.

Thunder's passing

Unforntunately, I had to take Thunder to be put down yesterday. He had gotten to the point where he could not walk without falling over and was crying out in pain quite a bit. This broke my heart since he is probably one of the most lovable cats I have ever known. He got the greatest happiness when he was sitting on someone's lap being petting. I know that my husband now has Thunder with him and they are probably very happy to be reunited!

Welcome 2008

To be honest, I am really happy that 2007 has come to an end. It has been a very rough year. I have taken the theory that 2008 is going to be much better. I am taking part in a swap on swap-bot where I list each day 3-5 things I am grateful for. Today, number one on the list will be that a new year has begun.

I hope that everyone reading this blog has a very Happy New Year!
